We weren't fighting Satan or demons -- just a human. Well, someone who used to be human. The Millennium Earl takes human souls and puts them in his machines, and then uses those machines to kill more humans.

Not sure. There's a lot we still don't know about the Earl... He's been around since the Great Flood though.

We've only really started fighting back about a hundred years ago. That was when we found the Innocence -- which is the only thing that can destroy the Earl's machines.
It's a material that's not of our world. The Church says it's from God, a weapon bestowed upon us to defeat the enemy.
Basically, it's a sentient material that can kill Akuma. It chooses its bearer, and it doesn't choose people very often. The most Exorcists we've had at a time is sixteen, but the number's usually lower.
[he takes his hammer from its little holster and makes it grow a little bigger, then holds it out for Uriel to see. She can probably sense that it's definitely a strange material, but that it's not divine? It does feel sentient though, alien. Distant in that it seems only interested in the Enemy,]

her hand draws close to it, but she does not touch it directly. merely hovering a hand over with an observing gaze. slightly, her head tilts to the side. ]

[His eyebrow rises at the mention, but... he's suspected too, that it's more than what the Church says it is. But hearing Uriel say so herself, who'd know best... It really is a shame that he can't see anyone from home again, if only so he can tell them.
He glances down at the hammer, thoughtful.]

Compared to them, I'm just someone who's temporarily taking up space. My Gramps and I joined the Order to observe the war. We're not true soldiers.
It's okay if I am. [it's better that way(?) The Order needs soldiers in any capacity. It's Lavi who's taking advantage of them, knowing they'd have no choice to accept.]
